Today we are remembering actor, patron, and friend Sir Michael Gambon.
Michael passed away on the 27th of September following a bout of pneumonia. He had his wife Anne and son Fergus by his side.
We are incredibly proud to have had Sir Michael Gambon as a patron of Betty Ann Norton Theatre School, providing inspiration to both our students and staff for many years.
Born in Cabra, Michael moved to London as a child. He returned to Dublin as a young man to work in the Gate Theatre Dublin, where he was noticed by Laurence Olivier and joined the (then new) National Theatre Company. From here, Michael went on to work on the West End, Broadway, and in Radio, Film and Television. Our youngest students would be most familiar with his role as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter franchise from the Prisoner of Azkaban film onwards. Michael’s career spanned over 6 decades. During which, he won four BAFTA awards for Best Actor. Michael was nominated for a Tony award for David Hare’s Skylight in the mid 90s. In 2017 he was awarded a lifetime achievement award by IFTA.
We are thinking of Michael’s family and friends during this time.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam dílis, may he rest in peace.
