Acting Scholarship

Ena Mary Burke Bursary

Acting Scholarship

The school offers an acting scholarship for children each year to cover all speech and drama classes for one year for new students from 8 years old upwards. The bursaries are competitive and entry is by audition only.

Audition requirements vary depending on age but generally students are required to perform a poem, a monologue and write/record a short piece about why they would like to attend speech and drama classes. Teenage students are required to perform a third selection of their choosing. This could be a mime, a selection of prose, a piece of original writing or any other form of performance art such as clowning, singing or puppetry.

The acting scholarship is offered in memory of Betty Ann’s childhood drama teacher, Ena Mary Burke. Ena Mary Burke was a prominent theatre tutor in Dublin. Many of Ireland’s great theatre practitioners were trained by her in her school. Notable pupils of Ms. Burke’s include Brenda Fricker, Milo O’Shea, Maureen O’Hara and of course, Betty Ann and her brother Jim Norton. The school also sponsors a bursary competition in Feis Maitiu ever year in Ms. Burke’s memory.
