My First Audition Experience

Sophia Erwin's first audition was for The Sound of Music

My First Audition Experience – an interview with Sophia Erwin

In October 2022, Sophia Erwin had her first audition experience where she tried out for the role of Gretl in Sandford Park’s ‘The Sound of Music’. She was successful and alongside Grace Lei, has been rehearsing twice a week since. Sophia recently gave us an interview about the process in advance of opening night!

What was the audition like?

It was great.  I was very excited because it was my first audition. I had to do a few of the lines from the Sound of Music and act the part where Gretl gives Maria a big hug when she meets her, and sing a few lines.  I met the director and the bigger kids who are playing the other siblings. Gavin who is one of my teachers in Betty Ann Norton’s was there too and that made it a lot easier because it was my first audition.

How did you feel when you got the part?

Amazing!

Was there anything that surprised you about the process?

It was much easier than I thought it would be.

What is your favourite part?

I enjoy going to the rehearsals because they’re fun and I look forward to them every week. I enjoy watching the older kids rehearse their parts too, especially the girl who plays Maria because she has a beautiful voice. Also getting to know the older kids who are playing the other parts.

What is your least favourite part?

I don’t have a least favourite part – I like all of it!

What has been the biggest challenge so far?

The tune of one of the songs (The hills are alive with the sound of music) was hard to learn!

Are you looking forward to opening night?

Yes – I’m looking forward to all of it!  I’m especially looking forward to when we sing ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ song because we march around a bed on the stage when we’re singing it!  I’m also really looking forward to when we sing ‘So Long, Farewell’ because I have the last line of it…

What is one piece of advice you would give to another child taking on a part in a play?

Just believe in yourself.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a child starting drama for the first time this January?

Definitely do it!  I started drama with Betty Ann Norton during COVID (and we had to do it on Zoom) and we all became really good friends and I’m always very excited and very happy to go to my class on a Saturday.  I’ve done competitions and acted on stage it has helped me be even more confident.  All my teachers are amazing.

Sandford Park’s production of the Sound of Music takes place from Tuesday the 31st of January to the Saturday 4th of February. You can book your tickets to see Grace or Sophia perform through the Sandford Park Website here!

A Follow Up! How did you find performing onstage, Sophia?

I played the role of Gretl for 3 nights and I loved every single part of it! I really enjoyed performing to a live audience and seeing their reaction. Having an orchestra playing while we were singing was amazing and the vocal warm ups really helped us keep our voices strong.  I’m so glad that I auditioned and that I got to be a part of such a great show!
